What is Public Health Nursing?

Public health nursing is a specialized form of Registered Nursing that combines nursing and public health principles.  According to the American Public Health Association , the primary focus of public health nursing is improving the health of the community as a whole rather than just that of an individual or family (reference:  Gale Encyclopedia of Public Health).  Our focus includes:

Immunizations

Tuberculin (TB) skin testing

Family Planning

  • Sexual Health Exams for Men and Women
  • HIV/AIDS Testing and Counseling
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease testing and treatment
  • Breast and Cervical cancer screening
  • Sexual Health Classes

Communicable disease investigations

Maternal Family Health

  • Best Beginnings
  • Welcome Home Program
  • Nurse Family Partnership
  • Children’s Special Health Program
  • Registered Nurse Case Management for high risk maternal and infant care
  • Specialty Clinics for Children with genetic, endocrine disorders

Adult Home Health Services

  • RN in home assistance with medication and case management
  • Certified Nursing Assistants provide personal care, light housekeeping, meal preparation and errands
  • Referral to community services as needed
