Natrona County Medical Reserve Corps Trains with Federal Assets
Two members of the Natrona County Medical Reserve
Corps have recently completed training with the United States Public
Health Service’s Commissioned Corps at Camp Bullis, Texas. Dr. Marty
Thone, NCMRC Director, and Theresa Dernbach each attended a week long
training session on the emergency response and deployment of a Federal
Medical Station. A Federal Medical Station is a mobile hospital unit
capable of providing care for victims of a mass casualty event. The
Public Health Service and its Commissioned Corps of medical
professionals are prepared to respond within 48 to 72 hours following
such an event to supplement the existing local response.
In the event of a mass casualty event the nations 695
Medical Reserve Corps units, comprised of over 125,000 volunteers, would
work alongside local responders to provide emergency medical support to
the injured and would subsequently assist Federal responders in
providing additional aid.
This training was designed to begin the integration of
the Federal response with the local Medical Reserve Corps response. Both
the United States Public Health Service and the Medical Reserve Corps
are under the direction of the Surgeon General of the United States.
